Description

139 is a detached house located on the south side of Chiswell, dating from the early to mid-18th century, although it has undergone significant modifications. The exterior is rendered and scribed, with a small area of exposed large Portland stone block on the left side of the ground floor. The roof is primarily covered with asbestos cement slates, with some stone slates present.

The house is a free-standing property that faces north along Chiswell and is two storeys high. It features a central three-storey 'tower' porch with a coped gable, which has plain sash windows above a 20th-century door with a very narrow transom light. To the right of the porch, there are paired four-pane sashes on both the ground and first floors, each with a central rendered flush mullion. To the left of the porch, there are similar paired sashes on the first floor above a blocked former shop front, where some structural stonework is exposed.

The house has stone gable stacks with cappings, and the left gable has a raised verge. The gable facing the road includes an attic light and a blocked door to the right. At the back, which features some stone slating, there is a plain sash window centrally located on both the ground and first floors. Although the interior is reported to be completely altered, the exterior still provides evidence of its early history and holds a significant visual position at the south end of Chiswell.
