Description
No. 165 High Street is a house located at the lower end of a short row in Fortuneswell, dating from the early 19th century, with some parts possibly being older. The building is constructed of large squared coursed blocks and features slate or concrete slate roofs along with stone end stacks. It is arranged in two stepped sections: the higher section, which is a small 20th-century one-storey gabled store adjoining No. 163, and a two-storey unit that slightly angles to follow the street line. This two-storey section has a 4-pane sash window at each level on the left end and, on the right, a 19th-century raised fielded panel door with two glazed panels, set in a stone-cheeked porch topped with a flat concrete slab. Both sections have concrete slate roofs. The building steps down the steep incline of High Street and has a return frontage that faces down into Chiswell, making it an important feature in the townscape.
