Description
Maiden Well is a Grade II listed structure located on the north side of High Street in Fortuneswell, Portland. It consists of the remains of a boundary wall and a well head or cistern, likely dating from the 18th century. The well is a small square construction made of rough squared Portland stone, measuring approximately 2 meters by 1.7 meters and standing 1.5 meters high, topped with a stone slab. Behind the well, there are remains of a stone block wall that rises six courses above the bank for about 8 meters in width, stepped at the southern end. Although it resembles a mounting block, this structure is one of the remnants of the water sources that were crucial to the island before piped water was introduced in 1900. As none of the formal well heads have survived, this modest remnant holds historical significance.
