Description
Fair Winds is a detached house dating to the early 19th century, situated at the lower end of a row in Portland. The front is of painted brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a rendered north gable and rubble construction elsewhere, all under a slate roof. The house presents a symmetrical two-storey, three-bay facade. The first floor centre features a blank window, while the remaining windows are 20th-century replacements, set within moulded architraves and plain stone sills. A pent roof porch covers a 20th-century glazed front door. Flush stone quoins are visible, as is a bold cavetto eaves cornice that returns at the ends of the building. The gables are raised to plain kneelers, and the central section has flat coping under brick stacks. Returns feature two small 20th-century windows at attic level, while the rear incorporates a raised central section over the staircase, with a raking roof, and a full-width single-storey lean-to addition. Despite the loss of original sash windows and the front door, the house is notably more grand than other properties in the area and is unusual for its brick frontage; the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments notes this to be the only example of facing brickwork dating from before around 1850 on the island.
