Description
No. 120 is a house located at the lower end of a short row in Chiswell, adjoining No. 145 High Street on its higher left-hand side. It dates from the early 19th century, with some parts possibly being older. The building features large squared coursed blocks, with some areas rendered, and has slate or concrete slate roofs topped with a stone ridge stack.
The structure has a one-unit section to the left of a two-unit plan. The small two-storey one-window unit, which was formerly a store or warehouse, includes a four-pane casement window above a plank door set within a stone-cheeked porch that has a concrete slab top. The three-storey unit to the right has a one-window front with 16-pane sash windows. This section returns to a raised parapet front, which features a 20th-century casement window on each of the three floors and a deep-set door to the left. The rear of the building is plain and includes a lean-to.
The building steps down the steep incline at this point in High Street, and its return front faces down into Chiswell, making it an important feature in the townscape.
