Description
Billington House is a detached house dating from the late 17th and 18th centuries, with some 19th-century windows. The exterior is smooth rendered, with an asbestos-cement slate roof and substantial brick stacks to the right and left gable. The building is a plain block, with the west end partly below street level. A gabled stair projection is at the rear. The house has two storeys and an attic. The ground floor, largely below street level at the west end, has a partly-glazed front door incorporating a radial light, sheltered by a cantilevered hood. Above the door on the first floor are two 12-pane replacement sash windows and a smaller single light window to the left. An inner panelled door with a 20th-century glazed porch provides access. The east side features a curved wall leading to a lower door. A 12-pane raking half-dormer is centred over the ground floor door. The rear of the house has a gabled stair extension, and to its right, a 16-pane raking dormer above a 16-pane sash window. There is also a 20th-century glazed extension. The gables are plain. The interior features a dog-leg staircase with splat balusters. The feet of large roof principals are visible, although they are mostly concealed. It is a puzzling building that may have lost some windows on the street front.
