Description

Walnut Farmhouse is a 17th-century building located on Cowgrove Road in Pamphill. It features timber-framed walls with brick infill, although the front wall has been rebuilt or refaced in brick, likely during the 18th century. The west gable wall is clad in asbestos slates, and the house has a thatched roof with a central brick chimney stack that has two diagonally set shafts and a moulded cap.

The layout follows a two-room lobby entrance plan, but the original doorway has been blocked, and the entrance is now at the east end of the house. At the west end, there are remains of a timber-framed structure that appears to have been an addition, though the upper storey of this addition has been demolished. The farmhouse is two storeys high, with a single-storey extension at the east end that has plastered walls and a tiled roof.

The main elevation, now of brick, features two casement windows with glazing bars on the ground floor, similar windows in the east extension, and two more on the first floor. There is a central window at mezzanine level that illuminates an inserted stair. The rear wall retains its timber framing and has a blocked doorway with a four-centred arched head. There is also a shaped moulded head from a former oriel window in the western first-floor room. The ground floor rooms have deep chamfered ceiling beams, and the fireplaces have been built up. Moulded plaster panels, which are covered by wallpaper, can still be seen on the chimney breast in one of the first-floor rooms.
