Description
Lower Dairy Cottage is an early 17th-century building located at right angles to Cowgrove Road in Pamphill. It features timber-framed walls with brick infill and a thatched roof, along with a brick stack. The cottage is one storey with an attic. On the east side, the section closest to the road has a ground floor wall that is recessed, which is not a true jetty since the main posts rise from ground level to the eaves, creating a covered way. Internal timber details indicate that this feature is original. This covered way is extended to the south by a later-added pentice with a catslide roof. The recessed section includes an entrance door and two casement windows. There is a ledged door and a blocked window in the rear section. The attic features two dormers with central glazing bars, one of which is recessed into the catslide roof. The gable end facing the road is half-hipped and has one casement window with glazing bars on each floor. Some exposed chamfered ceiling beams can also be seen. The building has an unusual form and may have originated as an open hall.
