Description

57-58 Broad Street is a late 18th-century building that stands three storeys tall. The front is made of coursed blue lias rubble and features a parapet and a slate roof. There are two bay windows on the first and second floors, constructed in wood with moulded panels and cornices, and the windows are sashes with glazing bars. On the ground floor, there are two sash windows with glazing bars on either side of the entrances. A triangular double flight of steps, flanked by an iron handrail, leads up to a double entrance that has a pilastered one-storey porch above both doors. The fanlights above the doors have an enriched semi-circular design, and the six-panelled doors have the top four panels cut away and glazed. To the left of the entrance, steps lead down to a cellar door. The rear elevation has three bays with sash windows featuring glazing bars set in segmental head linings. Inside, some contemporary features remain. The building was once a seminary for young ladies. There is also a north-east rear outhouse range made of stone rubble, partly stuccoed, with a slate roof. Nos 45 to 65 form a group with this building.
