Description
This building, located at 27B Market Place in Penzance, is a shop premises constructed in 1905 by Oliver Caldwell. It features granite with red and yellow terracotta dressings, and the roof is concealed behind a parapet. The layout consists of a ground floor shop with chambers above, designed in the Edwardian Free Renaissance style.
The exterior has three storeys and an attic, with a symmetrical two-bay north front. The ground floor has a later 20th-century shop front with a large fascia board. The first and second floors are adorned with paired red terracotta giant Ionic pilasters that have rustication, masks, and festoons, flanking tall recessed two-storey canted bays made of yellow terracotta. These bays feature Ipswich mullion windows and simulated tile-hanging, breaking the entablature. Above each bay, there is a small gable with a keyed oculus and a festoon below, with curved parapets between and balustrades behind. The left corner of the building is curved, featuring a narrow curved bay and flanking giant pilasters. The right-hand return consists of two bays that are similarly detailed but less ornate.
Inside, the ground floor shop has a suspended ceiling, while the upper floors have not been inspected. This building is a notable example of an Edwardian terracotta commercial structure.
