Description

This listing describes a terrace of 13 houses located on Mills Street, built in the early 1840s, with some houses completed later in the same decade. The buildings are constructed from coursed rubble and feature granite lintels and quoins, topped with gabled roofs made of artificial slate and brick stacks. The houses have single-depth plans with outshots and double-depth plans that include integral outshots for services. They are two storeys high and form a 26-window range, with No. 25 being a larger, double-fronted house with a three-window front. The granite lintels support 2/2-pane sash windows, which were originally 4/4-pane but have had the horizontal glazing bars removed, along with 20th-century doors. The interiors reportedly include original joinery and stick-baluster staircases with turned newels.

The terrace is enclosed by rubble walls that surround the rear gardens, with a wall along Telegraph Hill at the back featuring slate-roofed former privies. There is also an original dowelled fence at No. 23 and gates at Nos. 9 and 13. This row of houses is exceptionally well-preserved and was built as a speculative development for workers in the tin industry.
