Description

The Clock Tower and boundary wall, built around 1830 and slightly altered, are made of coursed dressed granite and feature a wooden bellcote on the roof. The tower has a square plan with a rectangular porch on the south side, designed in an Early English style. It includes chamfered two-centred arched openings and hoodmoulds. The structure consists of three stages, each set back above a weathered offset.

The porch features a large arched outer doorway with ornamental wrought-iron gates, small windows on each side, and an embattled parapet over a weathered band. Inside, the original inner doorway has been replaced by a granite war memorial inscribed with the words: "PASS NOT IN SORROW BUT WITH PRIDE AND MAY WE LIVE AS NOBLY AS THEY DIED 1914-1918," followed by 39 names and an additional 17 names for 1939-1945. The first stage has blind arched doorways on the sides and rear.

The upper stages are uniform on all sides: the second stage has windows with Y-tracery, while the third stage features small coupled lancets under a square hoodmould, and a large clock face above. The top of the tower has an embattled parapet and a tall octagonal bellcote in a matching style, complete with a swept cap and weathervane.

Surrounding the tower is a boundary wall made of large punch-dressed granite blocks, arranged in sections approximately 3 metres long, with concave coping between short square monolithic piers that have square caps. These piers are linked by twisted iron rails, and there is a wrought-iron gate in the centre of the front. A modern public lavatory built in the enclosure to the rear is not included in this description.

The tower, located on a site known in the 18th century as St Day Green, serves as a prominent focal point in this small town.
