Description

Carew House is a house, now apartments, dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, constructed in phases. The exterior is scored stucco painted white, with a slate roof and brick stacks. The building forms an L-shape, creating two sides of a rear courtyard, now a garden. A double-depth main range runs parallel to Fore Street, with a long south wing attached to its west end.

The front of the main range, facing Fore Street, has two storeys and two windows, featuring 10/10-pane sash windows and an early 19th century flush-panelled door with panelled reveals. The rear range has a wooden doorcase with slender fluted columns, a dentilled cornice, and a shallow pediment, framing a glazed tripartite door with a shallow 6-pane overlight. To the right of the door are four large 12-pane sash windows; above the door is a large 20-pane sash window, and to the right, two further 12-pane sash windows.

The south wing, of four unequal bays, is divided by giant convex fluted pilasters with moulded caps. It features two large double French windows in the center (now fitted with modern louvred shutters), 16-pane sash windows above, and similar windows on both floors of the outer bays. The ground floor has been altered to create a doorway in the left-hand bay. All window openings are segmental-headed, except for those on the right. The main range has a hipped roof at the right-hand end, while the long south wing’s roof is hipped at its junction; gable and ridge chimneys are present on the wing. The interior has not been inspected. Collan Harvey, a St Day trader who gained wealth from the "Truck" system in the mid-19th century, lived in this house.
