Description
Amber House is a mid-19th century shop and dwelling house, originally a single building, now divided into two separate dwellings. It occupies a corner site on Church Street and Fore Street. The construction is of stone cross walls with a lath-and-plaster front wall, all rendered, and has a slate roof and brick chimneys. The building has a long, rectangular double-depth plan.
The Church Street frontage has two storeys and 4 bays facing Church Street and 2 bays facing Fore Street. A plinth is present, along with plain pilasters to the corners. The doorway to number 1, located in the third bay, is accessed via three steps and features a wooden architrave with moulded consoles and cornice, a panelled reveal, and a recessed panelled door with an overlight. There are two 12-pane sash windows to the left of the doorway and one window to the right, which is now incorporated into Amber House. Four more 12-pane sash windows are at the first floor, all with exposed boxes and moulded wooden architraves. The fifth and sixth bays have matching windows at the first floor, and the former shop window at ground floor has been replaced with windows of a similar style, set with higher sills. The hipped roof has projecting eaves, and a chimney is located at the left gable. The Fore Street facade has a central doorway with a wooden, pedimented architrave and two similar 12-pane sash windows on each floor. The rear of the building includes a service wing and various 12-pane sash windows.
The interior of number 1 retains some original features, including a drawing room with a moulded plaster cornice featuring anthemions and other foliation. The kitchen contains a large fireplace with an original wooden architrave and mantelpiece. An elegant dog-legged staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed curtail is also present.
