Description
Wilton's workshop, located at the east end of the garden behind No. 6, is a Grade II listed building that dates from the 1840s. It was originally used by W.H. Wilton, a maker of mathematical instruments, particularly for surveying in mining. The structure is built of uncoursed rubble with timber-clad timber-framing and has a scantle slate roof. It has a rectangular plan oriented on an east-west axis and stands two storeys tall.
The east gable wall, which is the rear of the building, features garage doors at the ground floor, with weatherboarding above. There is a door to the left and two vertically-glazed windows to the right. The south side has a weather-boarded first floor with three square, eight-pane fixed windows. The principal elevations to the north and west were not accessible during the survey but likely have workshop-style windows similar to those found in the carpenter's shop on Telegraph Street. W.H. Wilton occupied the workshop from the late 1840s until 1876, when he emigrated to Valparaiso. The building is now partly used as a garage.
