Description
The Carpenter's Shop opposite Lynmouth Cottage is a Grade II listed building, likely built in the mid-19th century. It features uncoursed killas rubble, some rendered sections, and weather-boarding on a timber frame, topped with a slurried slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan and stands two storeys high. The ground floor, which is painted white, has a doorway at the right-hand end and a series of narrow vertical glass windows to the left. These windows are arranged in groups of 5, 12, 12, and 2 panes, with a deeper 6-pane fixed window in the center. The end sections of 5 and 2 panes appear to be centrally-hinged tilting casements. The upper floor is weather-boarded and features a long horizontal window that is offset to the left, divided into three equal sections with similar vertical glazing but with broader strips in the center, making 12, 8, and 12 panes. The roof is hipped. The right-hand end wall is rendered and includes a door at the first floor near the front corner. The rear wall, made of uncoursed rubble with granite quoins, is blind. There is a low gabled building attached at the left end, which is not of special interest. This shop is a good example of a small 19th-century workshop, similar to Wilton's workshop located in the garden of No. 6 Church Street.
