Description

This building consists of two shops with dwellings, located on Church Street in Crewkerne. The first shop, No. 1, is a late 18th century remodelling and refronting of a house that likely dates back to the late 17th century. It features coursed and dressed limestone with ashlar dressings, a slate roof, and a brick stack at the west end. The exterior is two storeys high with a three-window front that has rusticated quoins and a moulded cornice at the parapet. The windows are late 19th century 2/2-pane sashes with moulded architraves. There is a fine doorcase with pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. At the rear, a 17th century stone-mullioned window remains from the earlier house.

The second shop, which has a dwelling to the left and dates to around 1840, is constructed from Ham Hill stone ashlar with a pantile roof that is hipped to the east. It has a double-depth plan and is also two storeys high, featuring a symmetrical three-window range. The first-floor windows are late 19th century horned 2/2-pane sashes. Both facades have setback incised pilasters with triglyph capitals that support a continuous projecting porch, moulded cornice, and parapet. The east facade has a slight step back at the first-floor level. The mid-19th century shopfront includes panelled pilasters and a canted bay with a 20th century door, flanked by two plate-glass panes on each side, set between colonnettes with ornamented tops. Beneath the right window is a narrower, similar window. The interior of the second shop is reported to be completely altered.
