Description

The Red Lion Hotel is a former hotel that is now unoccupied, with origins dating back earlier than its early and late 19th-century facade. The building is constructed of stucco, featuring a painted plinth, rusticated quoins, and a surround to the main window. It has a slate roof with brick stacks at the gable ends and a tall stack at the center of the rear block.

The hotel is two storeys high and has a six-window range. The right half of the facade is a symmetrical three-window range with a carriage entrance on the left. The far left section is taller, with a crested roof, and may have originally been an adjoining house that was incorporated into the main block. There are three two-storey, slightly canted bays with paired 1/1-pane sashes that have margin panes; two of these flank a Dutch-gabled entrance bay that features a ball finial and a painted stone red lion on a 20th-century porch. Above the entrance is a round-arch 2/2-pane sash set within a painted, rusticated architrave, and the gable displays raised painted letters that read "THE RED LION HOTEL."

Between the main block and the taller left range, there is a carriage entrance with reeded pilasters, although the top is obscured by a 20th-century sign. This entrance is filled in with wooden paneling that includes a door to its left and many panes in the upper half. Above this entrance and to the right of the main round-arched window are additional 1/1-pane sashes with margin panes. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, in 1751, The Red Lion was one of the four leading inns in Crewkerne.
