Description

This listing describes a row of fifteen houses located on Mills Street in St Day, built mostly in the early 1840s, with some completed later in the decade. The houses at Nos 27 and 28 are constructed of coursed rubble with granite lintels and quoins, while Nos 2 and 4 are made of brick with granite quoins and lintels. The rest of the row features coursed and dressed granite. The roofs are gabled, covered with artificial slate, and have brick stacks. Most of the houses have single-depth plans with rear outshots, and there is one mid-20th century flat-roofed rear extension.

The buildings are two storeys high and have a total of twenty-four windows on the first floor. Granite lintels are found over two/two-pane sash windows, which were originally four/four-pane but have had their horizontal glazing bars removed. The doors are mostly from the 20th century, except for the original six-panel doors with narrow overlights found at Nos 2, 12-18, and 24. No 4 is a larger double-fronted house. Nos 27 and 28 feature a copper plaque and wreath at the first-floor center, commemorating the endowment of this street by William John Mills for the benefit and comfort of the old people of St Day.

The interior is said to include original joinery and stick-baluster staircases with turned newels. There are also subsidiary features such as rubble rear garden walls with slate-roofed former privies. Together with Nos 1-25, this row of houses represents an exceptionally well-preserved example of workers' housing, built to accommodate miners in the surrounding orefields.
