Description
Nos. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13 Higginson Street is a terrace of houses that were formerly silk mill workers' cottages, built around 1840. The buildings are constructed of brick in English garden wall bond and feature a graduated slate hipped roof. They have a single-bay double-depth plan, except for No. 1, which is double-fronted. The terrace is two storeys high and has eight ridge stacks, with the top corner of the front removed. All windows have stone sills and painted lintels, and, with the exception of No. 9, they feature 12-pane hornless sashes. The doorways are topped with round-headed arches, and all but No. 9 have boarded doors with ceiled tympana. Although No. 9 has had its joinery renewed, it retains its original window and door openings. The rear of the houses has windows with elliptical arches and no extensions. The privy blocks are still present, along with the curtilage walling. Some internal fittings are believed to survive in several of the houses. This terrace is a rare example of relatively unaltered housing for industrial workers.
