Description

Butts Mill is a cotton spinning mill built in 1905 by Stott and Sons of Oldham. It features a concrete and steel frame with a red brick and terracotta facade. The building is a six-storey rectangular block with a corner stair tower and a projecting hoist tower in the center of one side. The lower three storeys consist of continuous glazing with large nine-light windows that are separated only by narrow brick piers and the exposed concrete slabs at each floor level, which house the carding machines. The upper three floors alternate between windows and brick panels, serving as the spinning floors.

The stair tower showcases Arts and Crafts details, including clasping buttresses on each side. Concrete floor bands wrap around the tower, complemented by additional terracotta bands. Staggered stair windows enhance its design. The tower is crowned with a scalloped terracotta parapet and a copper dome topped with a finial. The hoist tower, which is one window and one brick panel wide, extends all the way up and is marked by the word 'BUTTS' in white tiling.

This mill was originally designed as a double mill, but one wall remains unfinished as the mirror half was never constructed. Butts Mill is notable for being the only large early 20th-century cotton spinning mill in the Wigan district and stands as one of the best surviving examples of its kind in the Greater Manchester area.
