Description

Alder Mill Office, including the entrance gate to the west, is a Grade II listed building dating from 1907, designed by Henthorn Scott. This office wing of the former Alder Mill, which has since been demolished, is constructed of brick with terracotta dressings. It features eight by four bays and stands at one storey high. The building is primarily made of red brick with a blue brick plinth, accented by yellow brick bands and yellow terracotta dressings. The window openings are adorned with cambered brick arches and keystones that rise above a cornice, terminating in capped features above the parapet, a hallmark of Scott's architectural style.

On the front side, there is a series of three-light blind mullioned openings above the cornice. To the left, a door with a fanlight and archivolt leads into the building. Above this door is an octagonal corner feature topped with a cupola that is set back behind a parapet, echoing the design of the mill's water tower. The other elevations of the building employ a similar architectural vocabulary.

The entrance is enhanced by elaborate cast-iron gates and piers featuring moulded Art Nouveau decoration. Inside, the office boasts decorated panelling, stained glass, Art Nouveau tiling, and highly enriched cast-iron wash-basin stands in a modified Adam style.
