Description
The office of the former flour mill, built in 1897, is located west of Steam Mill Street in Chester. This building is constructed from stone-dressed hard red brick and features a slate roof that is hipped at the south end, with two parallel ridges. The north wing is a flat-roofed single storey that lacks special interest.
The most notable aspect of the building is its east front, which has a Baroque style and faces the yard of the former steam-powered Georgian flour mill. This front has four bays and is adorned with brick pilasters. A glazed door is positioned to the north within a doorcase that features flush stone quoins and an arched lintel inscribed with the word "OFFICE." Below, there is a moulded brick dado, and the windows consist of two shaped six-pane windows and one four-pane window with upper hoppers, all set within stone basket arches. A dentil course is present at the second storey floor, which features seven two-pane sash windows, a stone band, and another dentil course above. The brick parapet has a stone cornice that forms a semicircle above a central clock, which is set in an ornate stone surround and dated 1897. Stone balls are placed above the pilasters and the clock surround.
The west front, which faces Union Street, is simpler in design, featuring double doors made of two fielded panels above one flush panel, accompanied by similar fixed wooden side panels in the south bay. This side also includes a plinth, sill and lintel bands, brick pilasters, a parapet, and a cornice, along with rectangular office windows that have two, four, and six panes.
The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value with the former steam flour mill and the Milns Seed Warehouse located at Canal Side.
