Description

No. 158 Foregate Street is a mid-18th century town house. The left bay and the east side facing Dee Lane were rebuilt or refurbished in 1907 by W.T. Lockwood. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has a grey slate roof.

On the exterior, the left bay features a painted plinth, rusticated quoins, and two flush 12-pane sash windows on the ground floor. The right bay has a front door made up of two flush panels and two simple panels, topped with an overlight that includes a central pane and six margin panes. This door is set in a panelled Doric case with unfluted half-pillars and a curved pediment, which has an unmoulded frieze, dentils, and an egg-and-dart cornice. To the left of the door is a sash window with an eared architrave, along with a 12-pane flush sash and a two-panel secondary door that has a moulded hood. The right corner of the building also features rusticated quoins. Each bay has two flush 12-pane sash windows on the first floor. All sash windows have painted stone sills and rusticated wedge lintels with projecting stone keys. The right bay has moulded stone coping, while the left bay has moulded terracotta coping on a half-round gable, which includes a cartouche dated 1907 and three ball finials. The east face towards Dee Lane has six flush 12-pane sash windows on the ground floor and four on the first floor. There is a ridge chimney and a lateral chimney on the rear bay facing Dee Lane. The rear of the building has no visible features of special interest.

The interior was not inspected, and the building was vacant at the time of the survey in April 1992.
