Description
The main gateway to Grosvenor Park Road and the yard gate piers were built between 1865 and 1867 by architect John Douglas, funded by the second Marquis of Westminster for Chester City Council. Constructed from granite, the gateway features quadrant plinths with "crazy paving" rubble on the side screens, square end-piers, and side-piers for pedestrian gates that flank the carriage-entrance gate piers. The main piers are adorned with ornate moulded octagonal finials, while the smaller piers are square, tapering to an octagonal shape beneath bluntly-pointed caps. There are likely original cast-iron piers and a gate for the maintenance yard located immediately to the left of the main gateway.
