Description
The park wall and gate piers east of Hobby's Well, extending along Dee Lane and The Headlands, were constructed between 1865 and 1867 by the architect John Douglas, funded by the 2nd Marquis of Westminster for Chester City Council. The wall is made of squared snecked sandstone rubble and granite. It features a plinth and replaced railings from Hobby's Well to the southeast gateway, which has two chamfered piers that taper to octagonal-section blunt-pointed caps. There is a squared snecked sandstone rubble retaining wall that stands 2 meters high between the southwest gateway and an inserted gateway at the junction of The Headlands with Dee Lane. A similar wall follows The Headlands, rising with the slope of the alley towards the main park gateway.
