Description
The statue of Richard Grosvenor, the second Marquis of Westminster, is located on a plinth in Grosvenor Park, Chester. It was created in 1869 by Thomas Thornycroft, funded by the Marquis's tenants, friends, and neighbours after his death in 1867. The statue is made of polished granite and white stone and is more than life-size. The granite plinth is inscribed with the following: "RICHARD : SECOND MARQUIS OF WESTMINSTER : K.G. : THE GENEROUS LANDLORD : THE FRIEND OF THE DISTRESSED : THE HELPER OF ALL GOOD WORKS : THE BENEFACTOR TO THIS CITY : ERECTED BY TENANTS FRIENDS AND NEIGHBOURS : AD 1869". The Marquis is depicted in Garter robes, bare-headed, with one foot slightly forward, a benevolent expression, and hands extended as if offering help. The statue is strategically placed at the intersection of the main north-south and east-west paths of the park, which was designed by Edward Kemp and features a lodge and other elements by John Douglas. The park was gifted to the City of Chester by the second Marquis of Westminster.
