Description

Billy Hobby's Well is a pumphouse pavilion located in the water garden of Grosvenor Park, built between 1865 and 1867. It was designed by John Douglas and constructed at the expense of the 2nd Marquis of Westminster for Chester City Council. The structure is made of sandstone ashlar in red and buff tones and is octagonal in shape, resting on a square plinth. Each of the four main sides features a pointed-arched opening flanked by a pair of polished red granite columns, which have 13th-century style capitals. The voussoirs above the arches are adorned with carved roses, and there are wrought-iron bars with spiked crooks. Each canted side has a recessed circlet displaying armorial sheafs and portcullises. A carved cove forms a cornice beneath the eaves of the light-grey slate spire, which is topped with a copper fish weathervane and a lead finial.
