Description
The building is an office structure from a former linen works, likely designed by Robertson and Orchar, dating from around 1860 to 1864 or 1874. It is part of a mill complex that includes several additions made between 1932 and 1933. The prominent two-storey office building features a three-stage Italianate tower on the south elevation, which faces the street. The building has a piended roof and consists of three rows of five bays. Surrounding the office are various former mill buildings, including eight saw-tooth weaving sheds to the north.
The former office building is constructed of squared and snecked rubble with raised ashlar margins, while the top stage of the tower is finished in smooth render. Architectural details include a band course, an eaves band, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course. The upper storey has round-arched window openings. The ground floor on the east, west, and north sides connects to other mill buildings, including the former weaving shed.
The street elevation on the south side features the piended roof tower on the right, which has a two-leaf, timber panelled entrance door. The top stage of the tower is adorned with bi-partite, key-stoned, round-arched windows that have stone mullions, and the building has deep, dentilled eaves. Some upper storey windows exhibit a 10-pane glazing pattern with timber astragals, while others have a small-pane glazing pattern. A few window openings are boarded or have broken glass. The building has wallhead stacks and is covered with grey slates.
