Description

Lowson Memorial Church, located on Montrose Road in Forfar, was designed by Marshall Mackenzie of Aberdeen and built between 1912 and 1914. This late Scots Gothic church features a cruciform layout and is constructed from red snecked rubble, with architectural details inspired by various sources including Elgin, Aberdeen Greyfriars, and St. Monance. The church has a five-bay nave with aisles, although the western bay is blind and includes a vaulted south porch that houses the narthex and an organ chamber above. The transepts do not have aisles and the presbytery is a single bay. A low central tower topped with a squat spire completes the structure. Inside, the church showcases round-arched arcades supported by circular piers and a waggon roof that is groined at the clerestory windows. Notably, the stained glass is of outstanding interest and was created by Douglas Strachan.
