Description

Greyfriars Church, located on Broad Street in Aberdeen, was designed by A Marshall Mackenzie and completed in 1903. This Perpendicular Gothic church features a nave and a single aisle, along with a large, tall, three-stage square-plan entrance tower that has angled buttresses and a spire facing west towards Broad Street. The church is adjacent to Marischal College. A notable feature is the large 16th century seven-light tracery window on the east elevation of the chancel, which was incorporated from a previous church. The building is constructed of grey Kenmay granite ashlar and includes a string course, cill course, and buttresses along the six-bay aisle on the south side facing Queen Street. The south elevation has deep-set rectangular and bipartite windows with splayed reveals.

The entrance elevation of the tower on Broad Street has steps leading to a central advanced pedimented entrance porch, which features a multi-panelled decorative two-leaf timber entrance door. The second stage of the tower has very slender, tall, paired bipartite openings. The top stage consists of paired tall and narrow perpendicular tracery windows on all sides, topped by a double-height slender crocketted and finialled parapet and a needle spire.

Inside, the church is whitewashed with ashlar dressings and has a three-bay arcaded nave with a clerestory on the south side. It features a simple open timber ribbed ceiling and a steep timber gallery at the west end. There are possible 17th century carved timber choir stalls in the east. The interior includes a polished granite communion table and pulpit, timber pews, and stained glass in the east chancel window created by Charles Earner Kempe. The church has predominantly multi-pane fixed leaded-pane windows, some of which have hoppers, and is roofed with grey slates, complemented by cast-iron rainwater goods.
