Description
Provost Robertson's House, located at 6 and 8 Upperkirkgate in Aberdeen, was designed by Robert Gordon Wilson and completed in 1899. This distinctive townhouse features three stories and an attic, designed in the Scots Renaissance style, with four bays and shops on the ground floor that incorporate fragments from earlier buildings.
The exterior is made of grey, polished granite ashlar, with deeply moulded cornicing on the ground and jettied second floors. The ground floor includes a shop with a rusticated round-arched entrance to the close at the far right, and an embedded Classical portal with a round-arched window above, which is topped by an armorial panel with a roll-moulded surround. The remaining bays to the left have segmental arched windows with raised cills. On the second floor, there are small 12-pane casement windows flanked by oculus windows. The roof features large, multi-paned dormers that break the eaves, with dormerheads on the inner bays containing fabric from an earlier building, one of which is dated 1680.
Inside, there is a moulded arch within the pend leading to a corbelled re-entrant angle turret stair. The rear of the building features a 16th-century moulded doorway with an armorial panel, dated 1730. The steeply pitched roof is covered in grey slate, with ashlar skews and skewputts, broad corniced ashlar stacks, and clay cans.
