Description
Advocates' Hall, located on Concert Court in Broad Street, Aberdeen, is a classical building designed by James Mathews in 1869. It is two storeys high with a basement and features five bays. The exterior is constructed from tooled, coursed granite with ashlar dressings, and includes a string course above the basement, band courses, a cornice, and a blocking course. The entrance is situated on the south elevation, featuring a doorpiece with Doric columns and a pediment to the far left, along with some segmental-arched openings on the ground floor.
The windows are predominantly four-pane timber sash and case. The rear of the building has a M-shaped gable, with coped gables and wallhead stacks.
Inside, the original room layout remains intact and showcases an excellent decorative scheme. There is a wide dog-leg staircase with decorative iron balusters and timber newels, as well as round-arched stained-glass stair windows made by Cottier & Co. The entrance floor is adorned with encaustic tiles, and there are classical chimneypieces, four and six-panel timber doors, some featuring consoled decorative cornices. The library includes original custom-built timber bookcases with steps and a gallery. The decorative deep plaster cornicing is of excellent quality, featuring dentils and console brackets, and there are working timber shutters. One ground floor room has been converted into a working courtroom but retains much of its original fabric.
An internal link connects Advocates' Hall to the Town House, which is listed separately.
