Description

Crathie Parish Church, designed by A Marshall Mackenzie between 1893 and 1895, is a fine example of a Scots Gothic church with a cruciform plan. It features a distinctive steeply pitched gabled nave and a square, corbelled, parapetted crossing tower topped with a splay footed spire. The church is constructed from coursed grey rock-faced granite and is located on a raised site near the main road, with the principal entrance facing west. The building includes a base course, cill course, and hoodmoulds over most windows. There is a separate Royal entrance on the south side, which has a decorative timber gabled porch and a two-leaf timber door with impressive ironmongery.

The west gable showcases a large rose window above a two-leaf timber door set within a round-arch opening, complemented by a timber lean-to verandah with a gabled entrance. The church also features some geometric tracery windows on the north and south sides, as well as lancet windows at the crossing and apse. The roof is covered with plain clay tiles and has decorative ridge tiles.

Inside, the church boasts an artistically fine interior with numerous references to the Royal Family. Round piers support the crossing, and there is timber elder seating around the apse. The south transept is designated for the Royal Family, while the north transept is reserved for local lairds. Notable features include an Iona marble Communion Table and a unique granite hexagonal pulpit, also designed by A Marshall Mackenzie, along with fine Victorian stained glass.

The boundary wall is low and made of granite on the south and north sides, with square granite gate piers.
