Description

This is a red brick warehouse located directly to the east of The Shipwrights in Padstow, dating from around 1870, possibly built for John Hawken. The warehouse is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with a stone rubble plinth on the north west range. It features rag slate roofs arranged in an irregular mansard style. The building was constructed in two stages, as indicated by two straight joints, with the north west range having an overall rectangular plan and the southern range having an irregular plan. An internal cross wall, measuring 9 inches, extends above the second floor between the two ranges.

The warehouse is situated prominently on the North Quay of Padstow harbour and stands three storeys tall, with steeply sloping mansard roofs. It retains remnants of loading bays located in the north east and south west gable ends, as well as in the southern gable end. The exterior includes plank doors and partly blocked window openings that are irregularly placed.

Inside, the warehouse features slender cast iron columns and timber joists that are reinforced with steel 'I' beams, along with timber partitions. The second floor has partially collapsed, and the roof structure appears to be of 'A' frame construction, with principals that are halved, lap-jointed, and bolted at the apices. At the time of inspection in 1987, the structure was partly derelict, and a full internal inspection was not possible.
