Description

The harbour walls at Padstow, which include the walls to the south of North Quay, to the east of the Strand, and to the north of South Quay, along with the slips and pier on the northeast of South Quay, were gradually constructed after the north pier was built around 1534. The harbour was deepened and the piers were rebuilt around 1854. The walls are made of slate stone rubble, arranged in horizontal and vertical courses, located in front of South Quay, the Strand, and North Quay, with slipways on the south, southwest, and north sides. The south pier extends north from South Quay, while the north or jetty pier, which is not included in this listing, was added in 1931 using reinforced concrete and stone rubble.

Padstow's port was already significant in the 13th and 14th centuries. In 1584, Norden referred to it as "the best haven on the north part of the shyre," and in 1602, Carew noted that Padstow was a town and haven of considerable quality, despite being somewhat poor, and the best on the north Cornish coast. During the 16th century, the main exports included fish, tin, and West Country cloth, while in the 17th century, slate became particularly important. Access to the port improved significantly in 1829 with the formation of the Padstow Harbour Association, which worked on enhancing the entrance, and in 1844, the Padstow Harbour Commission was established to regulate and improve the harbour.
