Description
The Old Ship Hotel is a hotel and public house, likely remodeled in the late 19th century or early 20th century, originally dating from the 18th century. It is constructed from stone rubble, rendered and painted, with a slate roof featuring gable ends and brick axial and end stacks on the front slope.
The building has undergone significant alterations to its original plan, which now features a double depth arrangement with projecting wings at the rear, creating a 'U' shaped layout. The front range has been transformed into a large open bar, with a partition on the left side separating the hotel reception area from the main bar.
The exterior is two storeys high with an attic and has an asymmetrical four-window front, with the right end obscured by an adjoining shop. It features a moulded string course at the first floor and deep moulded overhanging eaves. The entrance is located to the right of centre and consists of a 20th-century panelled door, flanked by two sash windows with 12-pane top lights and 2-pane bottom lights. The door and window openings are adorned with curved hood moulds. There are also two full gabled dormers with 16-pane sashes providing light to the attic.
The interior of the ground floor has been remodeled in the 20th century to create one large bar, while the first floor has not been inspected.
