Description

A house, likely originating in the late 16th century, now used as shops and flats. The building is constructed of stone rubble, with a rag slate roof and a hipped end to the front. It features a stone rubble side lateral stack with brick shafts.

The building is situated on rising ground, and the main range is built on a series of different levels. The front wing appears to have an original plan of two rooms, heated by the side lateral stack. The ground floor of the front wing has been partitioned to create a shop.

The front elevation has two storeys and an attic, exhibiting an asymmetrical single-window design. A 19th-century shop front is positioned forward, including 19th-century corner pilasters and lambs tongue glazing bars to its windows. A 19th-century bay window is situated to the right of centre on the first floor, and a two-light casement window is set within a raked half-dormer in the attic.

The interior of the front wing includes a circa early 19th-century chimney-piece on the ground floor, with a cloam oven in the fireplace of the rear room. C18th and C19th ceiling beams are also visible within the front wing. The rear range and upper floors were inaccessible at the time of survey, and a full internal inspection may help to accurately date the building.
