Description

The Shipwrights is a public house located on North Quay in Padstow, likely dating from the 18th century. Originally used for warehousing and possibly as a shipbuilders yard, the building features brick construction in Flemish bond with a stone rubble plinth and slate hung above the ground floor of the central wing. It has a scantle slate roof with hipped ends, and the eaves have been raised by at least two brick courses. There is a brick end stack on the left side.

The building is two storeys high with an attic and has a regular window arrangement of 4:2:5, featuring 20th-century windows with glazing bars. A moulded brick string course runs along the facade, with segmental brick arches and timber lintels above the ground floor openings, several of which have been altered. To the left, there are wide plank doors flanked by two casements on the left and a sash window on the right. The first floor has three casements and a sash window. The central wing has had its first floor reslated in the late 20th century and features two 20th-century windows on both the ground and first floors. To the right, there is a 20th-century door flanked by four 20th-century windows, with four more above and an oriel window over the entrance. The building also has four full dormers with raking roofs and two-light casements.

Inside, the building has been largely gutted, with the right-hand and central wing forming one large bar. There is a timber lintel above the end fireplace on the right, while the first floor has not been inspected. Several old photographs show the building before its alterations, and a large sawpit originally stood directly in front of it.
