Description

The Old Custom House Inn is a building that originally served as a custom house, bonded warehouse, and residence, and is now part of a hotel and public house. It likely dates from the 18th century, with extensions made in the mid-19th century and again in the late 19th or early 20th century. The Custom House is constructed from stuccoed and rendered stone rubble, topped with a slate roof featuring hipped ends and rendered brick end stacks. The warehouse, made of stone rubble, also has a hipped slate roof, while the house is probably built from stone rubble and is similarly stuccoed and rendered with a slate roof and gable ends.

Originally, the Custom House was situated close to the water's edge before the south side of Padstow harbour was remodelled. A large, deep-plan bonded warehouse was added to the north side around the mid-19th century, and in the late 19th or early 20th century, a house was constructed on the west side of the warehouse. In the late 20th century, these three buildings were combined to create a hotel.

The exterior features a two-storey, three-window east front for the Custom House, which includes a string course, incised lines in the stucco on the ground floor, raised quoins, and moulded eaves. The entrance is near the centre and consists of a panelled door flanked by two 16-pane hornless sash windows, with another door to the right. Above this, there are three early 19th-century sash windows set in two-centred arched openings with intersecting glazing bars. The warehouse has three storeys and an attic, with a three-window east front and a two-window north front, featuring brick segmental arches over the openings. The east front has two-light casements, while the ground floor of the north front has 20th-century doors and windows, along with two-light casements and a central loading bay above. The house to the right has a two-storey bay on the left and an entrance to the right. The interior of the warehouse has been largely gutted due to alterations made for the hotel.
