Description

ST BREWARD SX 17 NW 6/181 Small building approximately 25 - metres to south west of Leaze

GV II

Small building of uncertain purpose, possibly an ash house. Possibly C19. Granite rubble and moorstone. Plan: Small low building, roughly circular on plan with low entrance on south, opening onto a field and small opening on north, directly opposite, facing towards the farmhouse (qv Leaze). Exterior: Less than 2 metres in height. Low rectangular opening on south side. Corbelled roof of large pieces of moorstone. Remote moorland site in area where turf was burned in fireplaces in the farmhouses. Such a building would have been used to store ash, which, having a high potash content, would then be used as a fertilizer.
