Description

The W. Butland Family Butcher is a pair of shops with accommodation above, located in a terrace and dating from around the mid-19th century. The first floor is finished in stucco above the shopfront, with slate sills. The building features a scantle slate roof and brick chimneys at the gable ends, which it shares with the adjacent buildings. The eaves at the front slightly project.

The layout consists of two identical shops at the front, with a passage between them leading to rooms at the rear. The building is two storeys high and originally had a symmetrical three-window facade on the west road front, featuring four-paned horned sash windows on the first floor. The double shopfront has a splayed central entrance that forms a porch. Each shop window returns into the splay, and there are three doors, each with three panels and an overlight. The original shop window on the right has five lights at the front, each with a flat head over two centres that rise from small moulded caps, while the left-hand shop window is a simplified version of this design.

Above both windows, there is an original entablature with a cornice supported by terminal pilasters that have moulded and carved consoles. The impression of the lettering from a former trader can still be seen on the fascia. The interior has not been inspected.
