Description
No. 96 Lower Market Street is a town house with a shop, rebuilt in the early to mid 19th century on a 17th-century site. The building features stucco on masonry for No. 1 Truro Lane on the left and stucco on studwork for No. 96 above the shopfront. It has a fairly steep dry slate roof with an outshut over No. 1 and a hipped return on the left, along with brick end stacks towards the front. The L-shaped, double-depth plan consists of two storeys and a two-window range. The front of No. 1 Truro Lane projects forward, featuring segmental arches over 16-pane hornless sash windows. No. 96 Lower Market Street has a repaired original first-floor oriel window with hornless sashes, glazing bars, quadrant sidelights, and a moulded cornice. The early 20th-century shop front spans the full width and includes carved end consoles and a four-panel door on the left, while a blind obscures a possible original fascia. The left-hand return into Truro Lane has a wide window on the left under a timber lintel with a 20th-century three-light casement, a blocked window above, and a 20th-century sixteen-pane horned sash over a 20th-century door on the right. The interior of the shop has been altered in the 20th century and was not inspected further.
