Description

Tolcarne Farm Cottage is a small house, possibly dating from the 17th or 18th century, which incorporates some 17th-century masonry from a former house that may have been on the same site. The roof was raised in the 20th century. The cottage has painted rubble walls and an asbestos slate roof, with dressed granite stacks at the gable ends. The 18th-century part of the cottage has two rooms, which are now combined into one, with a parlour on the left and a hall/kitchen on the right. There is a later 18th-century or 19th-century heated lean-to on the right and 19th-century lean-tos at the rear. To the left, there is a ruinous former house or bakehouse that features a domed granite oven in its fireplace.

The exterior is two storeys high and features a nearly symmetrical two-window south front with a central doorway. There is a 20th-century porch and a 19th-century inner ledged door. The windows are 20th-century horned sashes, with original openings on the ground floor and enlarged openings on the first floor.

Inside, there are three granite fireplaces, likely from the 18th century. The large fireplace in the original hall/kitchen includes a domed oven, a straight chamfered lintel, and a hollow chamfered jamb on the left. The parlour fireplace has one chamfered jamb. Other visible features in the interior are from the 19th or 20th centuries.
