Description
Bolitho Cottage is a small house dating from the 17th century, with remodels in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of painted rubble with some dressed granite and has a scantle slate roof that slopes lower over most of the rear. There is a stone rubble chimney on the left gable end and a brick chimney on the right gable end.
The layout includes a large room on the left and a shallower room on the right, both featuring large gable end fireplaces. A stair projection is located on the left, and a shallow service room is on the right, both under an integral shallow outshut. The current entrance leads into the left room, while a thick stone wall surrounds the right room, separating it from both the left room and the rear service room. The right gable end is likely a rebuild from the 18th century, and part of the front wall has been rebuilt in the 19th century.
The cottage is two storeys high and has a roughly symmetrical three-window front facing south. The openings are grouped towards the left, with the doorway and a window above it positioned to the left of the center. The windows are small square openings with 4-pane horned sashes, except for a 20th-century window in a deepened opening on the ground floor to the right. The ground floor left opening features a 17th-century straight chamfered window head with a two-light granite mullioned window. The interior includes 19th-century floors, stair, and roof structure. The cottage is set in open farmland, adjacent to the unbroken moorland of Crowan Beacon.
