Description

The Red House is a small house that underwent remodelling or rebuilding in the 18th century, originally dating back to the 17th century. It was extended around the mid-18th century and again in the early 19th century. The structure is built from granite moorstone rubble, featuring partly dressed granite quoins, jambstones, and lintels. The roof, which was originally thatched, is now covered with corrugated iron and has stone chimneys located over the gable ends and the cross wall, with the left gable end being the original.

The house was originally designed with a two-room plan, likely consisting of a hall on the right and a parlour on the left, separated by a through passage. The mid-18th century extension added a room on the left, which includes a stair turret at the rear, while the 19th-century extension introduced a shallow lean-to pantry at the back of the original section. As of the 1986 survey, the house was uninhabited.

The building is two storeys tall with a slightly irregular three-window front facing southeast. The original two-window arrangement on the right features a roughly central doorway with a ledged door, and there are regularly spaced windows midway along the wall to the left, with irregularly placed windows to the right of the doorway. The right-hand ground floor window has a straight-chamfered three-light mullioned window head above it. The 18th-century extension on the left has irregularly placed windows to balance those on the right and includes a doorway on the right side. Some of the windows are four-pane sashes. Inside, there are old moulded beams on the ground floor, and it is likely that the roof structure dates from the 18th century, although it was not inspected.
