Description

Well Cottage is a small house dating from the 17th century or possibly earlier. The walls are a mix of rendered cob and stone rubble, with a slate roof that was originally thatched, and a rear right-side chimney stack. Originally, the house had a single-depth plan with 2 or 3 rooms, including a cross passage to the right of centre. The layout is now somewhat altered, with a staircase at the rear and a small room at the front, and it is unclear whether a stack is missing from the left end.

The front of the house has an asymmetrical facade with four small windows on the ground floor, one on the first floor, and one attic dormer. A 19th-century gabled porch with decorative bargeboards has been added to the right of centre.

Inside, the room on the right has a large chamfered crossbeam with run-out stops, exposed joists, and a 20th-century chimney piece, likely concealing earlier lintels and jambs. The rest of the house and roof were not inspected, but may be of interest for their historical significance.

The cottage has group value alongside Hiller and Sedgewell Cottages.
