Description
Brookside Cottages consists of two cottages that were originally one house, likely built in the mid-17th century or earlier. The left-hand cottage has undergone internal alterations in the 20th century and features a 20th-century rear wing. The building is constructed of whitewashed plastered cob and stone, topped with a thatched roof that is half-hipped at the left end and gabled at the right end. It has an axial stack with a rendered shaft and a rear left lateral stack.
The cottages are two storeys high and have an asymmetrical front with two windows on the left and two on the right. The front door is located at the extreme left, sheltered by a thatched porch canopy, while the door to the right-hand cottage is flanked by windows. The windows are small-pane casements, either from the 19th or 20th century, with glazing bars.
The interior of the left-hand cottage has been modernized, while the right-hand cottage is known to retain exposed carpentry. The roof has not been inspected but may have interesting features. The exterior of the building is very attractive, and further inspection of the right-hand cottage's interior might lead to a revision of its suggested dating.
