Description
Church Gate Cottage is a small house, likely built in the early 16th century and remodeled in the 17th century. It features whitened rubble walls with some cob and has a gable-ended scantle slate roof. There is a plastered rubble stack at the left gable end with a brick shaft, and a rendered rubble rear lateral stack also with a brick shaft. The cottage has a two-room plan, with the right-hand room heated by a rear lateral fireplace and the other room heated by an end stack. These fireplaces were probably added to an original open hall that was heated by a central hearth.
There is a 18th-century barn addition at the left end of the building. The exterior is two storeys high, with an asymmetrical three-window front featuring two-light 20th-century casements. The central window on the first floor is a wide three-light casement with only one pane high. Below this window is a 20th-century glazed gabled porch with a plank and glazed door behind it. The front wall projects slightly from the central area to the left-hand end. The lower 18th-century barn at the left end has a doorway to the right and double garage doors in the centre, with a lower pigsty beyond it.
Inside, the left-hand room has a partly filled-in fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel that has run-out stops and a cloam oven. The right-hand room features a large open fireplace with dressed stone jambs, a chamfered wooden lintel, and a cloam oven. The ceiling has rough, closely spaced beams. The roof structure consists of three original raised crucks with collars halved on and trenched purlins, although access to the roof is limited, the right-hand truss appears to be black.
