Description

Kialami is a small house that dates from the late 17th century, with extensions made in the 18th and 19th centuries, and alterations in the 20th century. The building features plastered rubble walls that may include some cob, and it has a thatched roof that is gabled at the right end and hipped at the left. There is a brick stack at the gable end and a rendered stack behind the left-hand end.

Originally, the house had a two-room plan and was at one time two cottages. It has since been converted into one large room, which contains fireplaces on the right-hand wall and the rear wall at the left-hand end. There are newel stairs located behind the right-hand room. A probable 18th-century outshut is situated behind the left-hand room, while a 19th-century lean-to against the right-hand end was extended in the 20th century.

The exterior of Kialami is two storeys high and features an asymmetrical front with two windows on the upper floor and three on the ground floor. The windows are 20th-century two-light casements of various types, with the central ground floor window being a former doorway. To the right, there is a 20th-century stable-type door beneath a thatch hood. The lean-to against the right-hand end has a 20th-century addition behind it. The rear elevation includes an 18th-century lean-to to the right under a catslide roof and a stair projection to its left.

Inside, the right-hand fireplace has a chamfered unstopped wooden lintel, while the left-hand fireplace features a replaced lintel. The interior also has stone newel stairs and likely retains original substantial straight principal rafters that are visible on the first floor.
